Utopia Project

Here is my utopia project in all its glory. It took me a while to post because edublogs keeps changing. It took me a while to figure out how to post it and I just ended up putting in text instead of a link.

Utopia Project

Facts:

            Name: Great Brettan

Founded: 2009 by a group of pioneers called: the flute of the commodores.

            Flag:

Map:

Great Brettan is actually located at the center of the universe, and it is in fact in the shape of a flamingo.

            Capital City: Vermilion City

Famous places/attractions:  Intergalactic symposium, Mt. Gemaine, Modern Drummer Museum, Guitar Hero Emporium, Rasputen Canyon, Smith Grove, The universe’s longest escalator, the universe’s biggest hardware store.

Climate: The climate in Great Brettan is a very interesting one. Since our planet is located at the middle of the universe this means that its orbital pattern is very fast. The consequence of this being that each day of the week has a different climate. The people of Great Brettan have to come to adapt to this very strange climate and everyone finds it very exciting. Each day of the week is a completely different climate and so this keeps things interesting.

1. Monday: Since no one really likes Mondays, the climate during this day is very rainy and wet to suit everyone’s mood. The temperature varies between 5-10 degrees Celsius and it rains non-stop the whole day.

2. Tuesday: Because there was rain on Monday, Tuesday cannot be a cold day because all of the rain would freeze and this would be most unfortunate. Therefore, Tuesdays climate is a tropical one. It will be very warm and sunny and the temperature will be around 20-25 degrees Celsius.

3. Wednesday: Wednesdays climate will be much the complete opposite of Tuesdays. It will be very cold and snowy and this will benefit all the winter sport activists of Great Brettan. The temperature will be in between -5 to -15 degrees Celsius.

4. Thursday: Thursdays climate will resemble that of a nice spring day. The snow is melting, the birds are chirping and it is just an overall appealing day. The temperature will be in between 7 to 15 degrees Celsius, just ideal for a nice light jacket.

5. Friday/Saturday: Since Friday and Saturday are regarded as the best days of the week, the climate has to match this. The climate of these days will be that of a very nice summer day. The sun is shining, the wind is blowing and it is not too hot, yet not too cold. The average temperature is around: 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.

6. Sunday: Sunday will be the day of the week where people relax, so the temperature has to be accommodating for many possible activities and our outings. This day will just be your average fall day. The weather is not too hot and not too cold, just perfect for a nice fall jacket. The leaves will be beautiful colors, there will be no forecasts of rain or snow and the average temperature will be around 5 to 15 degrees Celsius.

It is apparent that this climate is not regular, therefore it does pose its downfalls, but these have all been taken care of in the various sections of this project.

Population: Considering the size of Great Brettan, the population would have to be about 50,000 people. This would be a comfortable number of people because there would be enough people to keep the population steady and growing, but at the same time there is not too many people. There would be a high level of genetic diversity in order for people to learn about different cultures and to come up with a new culture of their own, using the knowledge they have acquired. Since Great Brettan is such a prosperous planet resources would not be a problem. There would be enough people to do all of the required jobs and people would live in harmony.

Government: When faced with the question of what type of government to have in my utopia I am quick to think that  one would not be necessary. When further thought is put into it, there needs to be some sort of organization keeping society in order, although people are basically free to do whatever they please as long as it is within reason. The type of government in Great Brettan would not actually be a formal type of government ( it would not be comprised of a president, cabinet ministers…etc). On the other hand the government would simply be a number of committees put together. These committees would each be in charge of a different field, much like we have today except they would be run by a prime minister or president. These committees would be in charge of passing bills and laws as well as discussing current political topics(if any were to arise).  Members of these committees are simply composed of people who want to put the time and effort in to ensure things run smoothly. In essence the ideologies that I would like to run my utopia by is that of communism in which everyone is equal. It is apparent that this is not possible because humans are humans, and so my utopia will not be a communistic one, we shall simply run by the underlying basis of communism.

In my opinion, currency comes hand in hand with government because the government is really what controls currency. Therefore I have decided to not actually have physical currency such as money. I decided on this because it is quite possible for humans to live happily without money. When you introduce money into the picture, people get greedy and this is when different classes/social statuses are established based on money. So the way currency is going to work really depends on the situation. If it is some sort of trade then maybe the barter system can be implemented where you pay it off by doing work or chores. Another means of currency would be to work, without getting paid, but anything you need: food, clothing, shelter, all necessities are free.

Overview of societal institutions:

1. Marriage: Marriage is encouraged, but it is not forced. The legal age to be married is 18 because by this time, one should be able to make smart decisive decisions. To get married, it is pretty simple. You have to make an appointment at city hall with someone who works for the department of significant others, and after this you can discuss the details: whether or not you want your marriage to be religious, where it will take place…etc. If a divorce is wanted then it is allowed only if both parties want to. In the case of a divorce, things will be divided fairly. Whoever paid for it ends up with it and this is fair.

2. Education: The opportunity to be educated is offered to everyone and anyone who is up for it. Since you usually go to school to gain knowledge to acquire a job later on in life, to make money, it is really up to you if you want to go to school because there is in fact no money in Great Brettan. If you want to simply go to school to gain knowledge to better yourself to possibly have a better job, then this is encouraged. There is no legal age for attending or dropping out of school, if you have a job lined up for you already, take it. Schooling is beneficial, it is not enforced. The classes that will be offered in school are the ones that are currently being offered in schools these days: math, sciences, English, French, (possibly other languages), geography, arts, history and physical education. In our society we believe in strongly in music because it can set you free. It is a great way to express yourself either lyrically or musically(instrumentally). The people who will be teaching school are the wiser of the population and the ones that are willing to teach. Later on in higher grades of education, you can become specialized if you would like. This meaning that if you like a certain subject, you can choose to only take classes in that certain field.

3. Health Care: All health care in Great Brettan will be free. No matter who you are, what you need, everyone is entitled to free health care. Special programs will be offered for people with special needs such as: handicaps or diseases(cancer, diabetes…etc). The doctors will be comprised of people who have specialized in biology and anatomy and they will share their knowledge with others who are learning in this field.

4. Taxes: There will be no taxes because there is no money.

5. Method of enculturation from one generation to the next:

The way in which knowledge shall be passed down from one generation to the next can be through many different ways. For example, it can be as simple as word of mouth. The old can discuss with the young about how things were run in their generation and the young can learn from this. Another way can be through writing. Anyone who feels like writing an enlightening novel about their generation, this is encouraged. Also another mean of passing down knowledge from one generation through the next can be through music. You can learn a lot by listening to music whether it is from the lyrics or music itself and through this you can see how things evolved.

6. Military: Hopefully, we will not need a military, but if push comes to shove and things end up taking a turn for the worse ( which they will not because this is a utopia) then the people of Great Brettan will be prepared to take up arms. If you are above the age of 18 then you are permitted to take part in military affairs.

7. Things to do: There are many things to do in Great Brettan, it is really a matter of finding out for yourself. Such things as: going to the movies, go-carting, paintballing, arcades and video games are all examples of pastimes. Others may include sports such as the many that we take part in today such as : basketball, football, baseball, hockey, rugby…etc. Also hobbies such as playing music, writing poetry, reading and freelance writing are all possible things to do.

8. Attractions: There will be many attractions readily available to anyone who wants to see or take part in them. They may include: architecturally interesting buildings, amusement parks and natural attractions such as waterfalls, canyons, mountains, shrines…etc.

9. Tourists: Inviting new people to visit Great Brettan is encouraged because we want them to learn about or culture and they may also bring something new to the picture to benefit us. If you are a tourist and you are looking for a place to stay, you are welcome to stay with any family, friends or anyone new you have met as long as you ask them. In our society things are pretty simple. Treat others like you want to be treated and to get respect you must give it. Tourists will have the opportunity to dive into our culture taking part in special events and attractions.

10. Religion: Everyone has the right to believe in what they want but the underlying concept that is taught will be evolutionism. You are free to start your own religion if you would like as long as it does not discriminate against  any others or involve sacrifices. Discrimination against ones religion will not be tolerated and the sentence will be some kind of chore related punishment or possibly exile. If you are not happy with how things are run in Great Brettan, you are free to leave. Cults will not be permitted because they are just simply weird.

11. Work Week: The work week will be 5 days a week and you choose which 5 days you want to work unless you are part of a required job such as: teacher, grocery store worker, gas station worker or police officer. The work day will consist of 5 hours. You can start when you want but you have to work a minimum of 5 hours and they must be productive. Each person will be allowed to take up to 4 weeks vacation per year and there will be at least a year allowed for maternity leave.

12. Business’s: Business’s will be non profit because there is no money. You offer your services or products to benefit humans and humanity. You are free to open whatever type of business you want as long as it is within reason.

Goods and services:

1. Economy: Since there is no currency in Great Brettan, there will not be much of an economy. So any existing economy is based on goods or laborious work.

2. Allocation of resources and finished goods: Great Brettan is a very prosperous and naturally rich planet. The way resources work is that it is on a first come first serve basis unless you have discussed a deal with others to get such and such resources. You are not allowed to waste resources and if you do so, you will not be permitted to access them again. Companies who harvest these resources can give them to companies in order for products to be made and these products will be shipped out to the ones who need them. Sine the climate in Great Brettan is so different, all agriculture is grown inside in insolated green houses. These green houses are ideal for the growth of fruits and vegetables because all the watering is done by machine. This allows for the fruits and vegetables to grow to maximum capacity.

3. Transportation: Transportation such as vehicles(cars, trucks..) and motorcycles are custom. It is asked that you carpool in order to save emitting too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Other means of transportation such as train, boat, bus and airplane are also existent in Great Brettan.

Other:

1. Holidays: There will be a minimum of one holiday per month to ensure happiness and a break. Religious holidays will also be permitted but they shall not be enforced on the non religious. If you have a proposal for a holiday you can present it to a member of a committee and they will discuss it and see to it being made a holiday. There will be a maximum of 4 holidays per month.

2. Police Force: A police force will be comprised of the alpha males of Great Brettan who are all for the better of humanity. They will keep the peace and help solve any disputes that will arise. If further help is needed the problem shall be brought to a committee.

3. Outside World: Contact with any outside world is encouraged to spread the word of Great Brettan and to possibly establish sub-colonies of Great Brettan in other areas. We can learn from different societies and hopefully come to grips with any problems they may have.

4. Animal Life: The animals who live in Great Brettan are very indigenous to this planet because of the unusual climate. They have all adapted in one way or another to the strange climate by either growing some sort of special skin or fur. Popular animals include: chickens, dogs, cows, pigs, cats, giraffes, zebras, hippopotami, amphibians, monkeys, gorillas,  and aquatic animals and mammals.

5. Children: You do not have to be married to have children, and each family must have a minimum of two children. If you want to put your child up for adoption there are such facilities available, but it is not encouraged.

This is only my ideal utopia. I wish to live in a world where no one is discriminated against and people can just live in harmony. We will live pretty simple lives. If you wake up one morning and you decide you want to dig a hole, then you dig a hole. You do not need anyone’s approval to do anything as long as it does not degrade humanity or society. Music shall be a big influence in this society because you can do anything through music. You can find yourself, express yourself and simply have a good time while doing so. Hopefully some people will not ruin it for others and we will all be able to live in Great Brettan in true happiness and unity.

The past couple of weeks.

I don’t really like having a week to week summary on my blog because I find it gets kind of boring and no one really gets anything out of it. So, I just like summing up key points that have happened in the past couple of weeks.

These past couple of weeks have been very stressfull because of the amount of work that I have been asigned (not only in english) but all my classes as a whole. What makes things even worse is that I am the type of person who procrastinates so, adding on to my stress. On the plus side, I have finished my ISU and I think it is quite superb. I am very happy its done because this is what we’ve been working towards the whole semester. Also, I have to say I was quite upset with Mustapha Murray last week. The whole week he told me that our Brave New World test was going to be on monday June 2nd, but he decided to change it to friday the 30th. He told us that it was going to be on friday, thursday. Since I had not yet finished the book, I was very scared and didn;t know what type of essay question to expect for test. So all in all, I ended up reading brave new world in one night. It actually ended up being a pretty good novel. It was a pretty easy read and it kept me interested.

Lately I have been having a lot of trouble with edublogs, and Im quite happing that my blogging days will soon be over. Somehow edublogs has managed to change my password, so I had to retrieve a new one, this delaying my ability to post my utopia project. So hopefully I will not lose marks because of edublogs.

Well, last night when I got home from school… I took a nap. After this nap, I decided to get cracking on my ISU essay, since I had not really formally started it. So, I worked away at it for a couple of hours, and I actually ended up fiinishing it. I was really surprised because I did not really intend on finishing it, but as it stands, I did. In total, my essay itself was 12 pages long and I am quite content with it. Im also very happy with the fact that I am done my essay. We’ve been working on this assignment all semester, and its finally done:) C’est beau.
